The ugly girlfriend is the first book in the lonely hearts series. I read The Grunt first and fell in love with the book so I decided I should read the rest of the series starting with this one.
The concept of the ugly girlfriend is very close to home for me. I am not fat but being a dark skinned girl most guys don’t view you as ‘beautiful’. Boys never ask you out and it hurts your self-esteem. I was excited about the book because I wanted to see how LaToya overcame all the emotional challenges I went through. I think I put too much pressure on the book because I felt a little let down. It was sweet but it could have been so much more.
Latriva is a great writer but the writing style in this book confused the hell out of me. One minute it’s from LaToya’s point of view, then it’s Mitch, then it’s Angela, Elaine… I was like why? It was not necessary. Mitch and LaToya’s viewpoints would have been enough.
The book was short and the romance between Mitch and LaToya didn’t sell to me. I didn’t believe their romance. I felt like they hardly spent any time together and all of a sudden they’re in love. In my opinion the emotions were not raw enough, there was so much hurt between the two of them that the book could have easily ripped me to pieces like they usually do. Which is a good thing because I wanted to feel their connection.
I liked and was a little disappointed at how self-assured and confident LaToya was from the beginning. She knew who she was and kinda accepted it in a way. I love seeing strong women, someone who is not afraid to show their emotions.
“I’m scared, Mitch” she whispered on his lips. “Me too,” he assured. “But I love you, LaToya.”
All that said I still really love Latriva’s books. I like that she tackles romance from an interracial point of view. I know that it is accepted in today’s time but we still have those people out there that would condemn people for falling in love with someone outside their race. #SameLove people, Get over it.
“Do you think that just because he’s screwing you suddenly he’s an honorary black man? Don’t be so blind. Most importantly sister, don’t be a sell-out.”
